About the Session
Families spending time together in the kitchen provides more than great eating!  Whether it is measuring ingredients, mixing muffins, rolling dough for pizza or shaping cookies; time with children in the kitchen provides long lasting benefits.  The Home Baking Association (HBA) has designated February as “Bake for Family Fun Month” and has resources, recipes and activities to help families get started!  During the session, you'll learn about recipes, baking activities and opportunities to promote families spending time together in the kitchen. From toddlers to grandparents - baking is the perfect family activity!

The resources offered during this session are appropriate for FCS or youth educators in classrooms and communities, for parents and grandparents, and for FCCLA and 4-H programs that teach baking skills for a "device-free" activity, promote early childhood literacy and math, and build relationships between parents and children.
During the session, attendees will:

  1. Review multiple research-based benefits in literacy, math, science nutrition, relationships and school success gained by baking and cooking together.

  2. Receive age-appropriate skills and task guidance for ages 2 to adult.

  3. Identify six essential food safety steps to apply at home or in school baking.

  4. Access dozens of virtually ready baking resources to actually teach or share baking skills.

Teaching guides for baking food safety, age-appropriate baking tasks, how to organize baking together and best practices for baking for special needs will be provided.  Media resources and content to plan events/activities to celebrate Bake for Family Fun month will also be shared.
